"Ex-police chief Hanefi Avcı sentenced to 15 years"
http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/Default.aspx?pageID=238&nid=51062
"Istanbul’s 9th High Criminal Court sentenced Avci to a total of 15 years, 4 months and 5 days and fined him 10,000 liras in the Revolutionary Headquarters case July 19."
[Note: It is widely believed that the charges against Hanefi Avci, a former police chief, are absurd, and that he was targeted because of a critical book he wrote about the Gulen Movement's infiltration into Turkish power structures.]

Protesters shooed away from Islamic center in Saylorsburg, hold rally in field
http://www.poconorecord.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20130714/NEWS/307140327
About 130 protesters, from across the United States, attempted to protest against Fethullah Gulen in front of his Saylorsburg residence, but were directed away by Pennsylvania state troopers. Many held Gulen partially responsible for police brutality in recent crackdowns against anti-government protesters in Turkey.

"Gulenism: The Middle Way or Official Ideology?"
http://www.jadaliyya.com/pages/index/12673/gulenism_the-middle-way-or-official-ideology
By noting how Gulenist media completely reversed course from first showing sympathy with the protesters to then attacking them, this article illustrates the two-faced nature of the Gulen Movement. The section on "Gulenist Discourse: Dehumanizing the Protestors" is especially interesting. "In a half-hour speech, Gulen characterized the protestors as illogical (mantıksız) people who had lost their humanity (gayri-insani; insani çizgisini korumamış)."

"Azerbaijan Rolls Out Red Carpet For Visiting U.S. Lawmakers"
http://www.washdiplomat.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=9391:azerbaijan-rolls-out-red-carpet-for-visiting-us-lawmakers&catid=1504&Itemid=428
This article is remarkable not once mentioning the name of Fethullah Gulen or the Gulen Movement, despite covering in detail a large conference organized by the Gulen Movement in Azerbaijan, which "11 sitting members of Congress, 75 state representatives and three former White House aides" attended. The article does mention the Turquoise Council of Americans and Eurasians, without noting that it is part of the Gulen Movement. After reading this article, one has to marvel at how the IRS has (so far, based on the latest available Form 990s) allowed the Turquoise Council to keep 501(c)3 status and deny that it is lobbying. Again the question is raised, is there some reason that the US press avoids mention of Gulen?

"Turkey: Country's Political Weirdness Debuts on the World Stage"
http://www.eurasianet.org/node/67118
Schleifer makes a key point in his line "Try succinctly describing the role of the powerful Islamic Gulen movement, which has no official leadership inside Turkey and whose spiritual leader actually lives in the Poconos,..." It is indeed very challenging to explain the Gulen Movement to Americans, as we have not encountered anything like it before.

Erdogan Not Yielding to Protesters
http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2013/06/taksim-protests-erdogan-not-yielding.html
The article mentions that the Gulen Movement has recently been in conflict with Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan. "Some street protesters claim there are significant numbers of Gulen supporters in the police establishment, and these unwarranted attacks on civilians could be a means to hurt Erdogan politically and favor [Turkish President Abdullah] Gul, who is considered to be close to the Gulen movement, in his place. ...... it has been the Gulen movement that has primarily taken over the security establishment and created the fear of their privacy being invaded either through wiretaps or the judiciary."

"Man admits to $50M tax-fraud scheme involving Croton market"
www.lohud.com/article/20130604/NEWS02/306040059/Man-admits-50M-tax-fraud-scheme-involving-Croton-market
Adem Arici, whose Gulenist affiliations have included the Turkish Cultural Center New York as well as the Sema Education and Health Development Co, has pleaded guilty in a US District Court to hiding more than $50 million in revenue from the IRS. While he delivered his plea in Turkish, using an interpreter, the article notes that Arici is a US citizen. Arici was the co-owner of a chain of grocery stores in the NY area, including one named Zeytinia. (Note that the Sema Education and Health Development Co forgave half of a large loan to Fulton Science Academy High School, formerly named "T.E.A.C.H.", a Gulen charter school in Georgia whose "sister" middle school later had its charter revoked. Arici also wrote a $6000 check to Hillary Clinton's campaign in 2008, 6 days before Bill Clinton mentioned Gulen in a speech that has been widely cited by Gulenists as an "endorsement.")

Today's Zaman, Turkey (note: this "newspaper" is run by the Gulen Movement)
"Ergenekon suspect convicted for insulting Gulen"
http://www.todayszaman.com/newsDetail_getNewsById.action?newsId=312867
This article shows how people in Turkey face jail sentences merely for criticizing Fethullah Gulen. It is very telling that a Gulen Movement-run newspaper would publish such news as if it were something to be proud of. It is also noteworthy that Zaman accuses this critic of belonging to the "Ergenekon" plot (it seems that nearly all Gulen critics are said to be part of this plot). The credibility of the "Ergenekon" investigation has been questioned by numerous mainstream news sources and researchers, yet Zaman writes about it as if it were to be taken seriously: "Muammer Karabulut, who stands accused in the investigation into Ergenekon -- a clandestine terrorist group that sought to undermine democratically elected government -- has been convicted and sentenced to one year in prison for insulting Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gulen."

Majalla - Nicholas Birch
"Turkey’s Biggest Export: The many problems of Fethullah Gulen"
http://www.majalla.com/eng/2012/05/article5523184
Birch notes the Gulen Movement's success at creating a positive impression outside Turkey: "Playing on simplistic western ideas of Sufism as ‘tolerant’ Islam, its leaders have proved adept at marketing it as a moderate alternative to Al-Qaeda and its offshoots." The article explains the growing discomfort with the Ergenekon "investigations" being conducted by part of the Turkish judiciary, partly because they "seemed to turn into a witch-hunt of critics of both the government and the Movement." Birch observes that there is an ongoing reassessment of the Gulen Movement by both the Turkish and the US press: "The New York Times, until recently a fairly unreflective cheerleader of Fethullah Gulen and his educational activities, has recently published two articles criticizing the Movement."

“Many believe that the police and prosecutors have been hijacked by an Islamic network led by Fethullah Gulen, a Turkish preacher who lives in the United States. Nedim Sener, a journalist who has written a book on the network, said the involvement of Mr. Gulen’s followers was an “open secret.””

“When a Kleptocratic, Megalomaniacal Dictator Goes Bad”
“The force promoting political Islam here comes out of Turkey, the country with the closest ties to Turkmenistan. A private group led by a Turkish missionary named Fetullah Gulen has opened 14 ''Turkmen-Turk'' magnet schools in the country. ….. Although the schools are financed with Turkish money and students are taught mostly by Turkish teachers, …. The schools also, very covertly, proselytize their version of militant Islam, which includes advocating the need for Islamic law. ''This is the one radical influence that I know about in Turkmenistan,'' says Shirin Akiner, a lecturer in Central Asian studies at the University of London.”
